GIFs: Final Animated GIF Self-portrait

Updated: May 10, 2018

Export and masking are the two concluding steps of my GIF self-portrait. As well as my first GIF self-portrait, it needs to be compressed by Adobe Photoshop. Here’s the final product.

Step 1: Export the 3D animation

I separated the industrial style arm from the models so that I could edit my face behind it in Adobe Premiere.

I then exported two pictures, and the unpainted one was overlaid by the one with my face on it.

To loop the movement, I made an animation in which the next face will move to the same position.

Step 2: Masking

First I masked out my eyes when the arm has just left it.

Next, the unpainted layer was masked out and the key points were precisely designed to let the shape of the mask transform with the movement of the arm.

Although I have stuck in layers’ order and UV mapping for several times, my GIF self-portrait finally turned out to be nice.

All in all, I am pleased with the final result, which perfectly reflects my professional skill and my self-expression. Innumerable ‘faces like me’ are produced in the endless assembly line. I’m sold as a box of meat on this website. It seems like we mortal can only be chosen by the fickle world. However, I am Lydia Wang, the one who has special thoughts, the one who want to challenge herself and the one who wants to learn, to touch and to feel the world. I am ‘I’, the one who cannot be copied. This is the description of me. This is my self-portrait.
